How to Cope with Midlife & Menopause Overwhelm
Feel like you’re juggling 100 things... and dropping all of them?
You’re not failing. You’re just in midlife, possibly going through perimenopause or menopause, and your brain and body are screaming for relief, and much needed SELF CARE!
Overwhelm in midlife is real. Whether it’s emotional exhaustion, decision fatigue, anxiety, or simply the mental fog that leaves you staring at your to-do list in tears. It’s time to press pause.
Why Midlife Feels So Overwhelming
As oestrogen and progesterone decline, they impact your:
- Cortisol levels (your stress hormone)
- Sleep quality
- Serotonin production (your happy brain chemical)
- Ability to cope emotionally
Add in responsibilities like work, ageing parents, adult kids, health changes, and personal transitions and it’s no wonder you feel like you’re barely holding it together.
Signs of Midlife Overwhelm
- Feeling constantly anxious, snappy, or tearful
- Brain fog and forgetfulness
- No motivation for work or self-care
- Avoiding social situations
- Craving quiet or wanting to run away
- Thoughts like “I just can’t do this anymore”
What Can You Do About It?
Here’s what I recommend (and personally practice!):
1. Step Away and Reset
Give yourself permission to rest. Book a night alone. Take a long bath. Sit in nature. You don’t have to earn a break.
2. Journal Your Needs
Ask yourself:
- What do I actually want right now?
- What’s draining me the most?
- What one thing could I change this week?
3. Support Your Nervous System
Meditation, tapping (EFT), deep breathing, and magnesium all help reduce overwhelm quickly. Ask me if you want to know more about EFT.
4. Get Hormone-Savvy
Sometimes overwhelm isn’t a mindset issue, it’s a hormonal one.
Low progesterone, fluctuating estrogen, and high cortisol can create emotional chaos.
