Every day I receive long essay style emails or phone calls from women and it breaks my heart. For years they’ve been suffering with emotional and physical symptoms that come with Perimenopause. Thank you so much to fellow widow Kerry for writing a fabulous article on her journey as a Widow and Menopause. Read the article in my story or the Blog link in my profile.
I work with a lot of widows, as a widow myself I find I can relate to the grief and symptoms.
I measures levels of hormones using the DUTCH method – a dried urine test to measure hormones and hormone metabolites, which access hormone production and breakdown.
“Not surprisingly, widows tend to have extraordinarily high levels of cortisol – the stress hormone,” says Cat. “Not only are they coming to terms with the trauma of losing their life partner but also they suddenly have to make massive life-changing decisions and navigate a new life without their soulmate.
You’re running on adrenaline and cortisol. You’re probably not eating properly, sleeping well, looking after yourself and the eventual symptoms are severe fatigue, panic attacks, anxiety, low moods, brain fog – even hot flashes can be down to cortisol.
These symptoms are so similar to those experienced when levels of oestrogen and progesterone naturally start to fall – which is what happens in the peri menopause. So, when grief and peri menopause collide, the emotions and symptoms are exacerbated. You’re hit with a double whammy and it’s so hard to tell what is grief and what is the perimenopause.
When this happens, it’s even more important to look after yourself and nourish your body. For most widows, cortisol can be the primary culprit, so it’s vital we address this first as well as look to balance your other hormones. It can be a more complicated and emotionally tough process.”

Anxiety can be caused by an imbalance in the endocrine system. When the hormones are out of balance, symptoms like anxiety, depression, irritability, mood swings, foggy brain, tense muscles and sleep issues can occur.

Let’s take a look at our oestrogens. We look at all 3 in the DUTCH Test.
E1 Estradiol is most abundant in our menstruation years, it’s more potent helping us feel well and balanced.
E1 Estrone is more abundant in our Perimenopause and menopause years.
E3 Estriol is a weaker oestrogen normally seen in puberty and pregnancy, but sometimes in Menopause.

Progesterone intolerance is different to progesterone drop off that occurs 1 or 2 days before your period begins. 10 years ago, can you believe I wasn’t happy with my weight 🤦🏼‍♀️ I had an amazing PT who introduced me to the big boys Weights Room at the gym. The only cardio I did was walking on a treadmill on incline. I ate a clean high protein diet. And I worked on my MIND. Emotionally I was at my happiest. Let me know when you were at your happiest. Perimenopause kicked in for me at 39 - it started with some moods, crying for no reason but the tummy started to expand despite following the same routine.

Reasons for weight gain in the 40s+ - DM “weight” for info of a quick 4 week Weight Loss & Virtual Menopause Gastric Band programme

6. High Stress I see quite often on the DUTCH Hormone test that women’s cortisol is out of whack too. Find some way of relaxing and reducing stress every day (without reaching for the bottle of wine).
7. You can’t sleep You need to create a bed time routine again. Dimming lights and avoiding the blue light from your screen helps to release Melatonin. Plus avoiding the night sweat inducing foods can help, no coffee, alcohol or spicy food in the evening. Keep your bedroom cool, dark and clutter free.

Your waking up anxious with a sense of dread for the day ahead. Maybe you were prescribed HRT or the antidepressant but it’s not helping this symptom - let’s take a look at your Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR).
We look at this on the DUTCH test (DM for info) - ☀️ CAR is a natural process that happens when you wake up. Normally cortisol rises and falls in a rhythm through the day in a predictable pattern.
🆙 Cortisol is typically low at night helping you sleep and rises 30 minutes before waking (CAR) peaking 30 minutes after getting up. Then cortisol continues to rise in the morning.
⬇️ Dropping off gradually in the afternoon and evening.
😩 High CAR can bring those panic or anxiety attacks.
😭 Low CAR can leave you feeling fatigued, sluggish or depressed.
To help your own natural rhythm think about a bedtime routine - not too much cardio or high energy activity at night, Dim the lights, stop scrolling on that phone. Go to bed at similar time each day. When you wake up get morning sunlight, ideally go outside or sit near a window.

What are your views? The media have done a fabulous job in highlighting Menopause - More women are discussing it and getting help. I see clients who have had a great experience from their NHS or Private GP. I also see clients who have negative experiences - their levels are too high, their Doctor just increases the medication and they don’t feel listened to. It’s vital that you listen to your body and do what is right for you.
With any news article - whether good or negative, it gets the conversation started and highlights the issue around women’s health .

Crying for no reason can you relate?
This was me, 39 almost 40. Crying for absolutely no reason. Life was good. I had nothing to worry or complain about (maybe the odd money worry but nothing substantial). So why was I sad and in tears for no reason. Crying behind the bathroom door, or taking a bath at 4 o’clock in the afternoon, crying my little heart out.
Now the crying is back sometimes with occasional anxiety spurts - as my progesterone has dropped significantly and when I go through periods of high stress with lots of cortisol in the system!

Sometime the crying stage lasts just a few months, sometimes longer. The uncontrollable crying can start at any time, at work, when in company or alone. And it can be embarrassing when you can’t explain what’s wrong.

In 2022 Martine McCucheon said she thought she was going into Perimenopause as she was getting more symptoms on top of her Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia. In 2023 she’s opened up about her crippling anxiety and felt at times she had lost her mind. For her she says HRT is helping.
Anxiety is a common symptom of Perimenopause (it’s one I get myself occasionally) and many of my clients tell me all their GP says is “i will prescribe an antidepressant”. There’s a little more to it! It’s not always due to declining hormones hence why so many say HRT isn’t helping the anxiety or moods.

There are over 34 symptoms linked with the Perimenopause or post menopause. I get a lot of Peri Menopause and Post menopausal women telling me they can’t lose weight, and all they want to do is munch through chocolate, crisps, biscuits - they lack control and motivation. Sometimes it’s due to low Dopamin levels which I see on their DUTCH test. When your body has low levels it sends your brain signals to get more which can lead to pleasure speaking activities - such as cravings, needing sugar, carbs or wine. Breaking the Taboo around Menopause in the manufacturing industry which is heavily male dominated.
