Crying and emotional in Menopause

I don’t know why I’m crying!

I hear this all the time from my Clients and women and my menopause meet-ups.

AND I TOTALLY GET IT!! This was me! Age 40, crying for absolutely no reason. Life was good. I have nothing to worry or complain about. So why was I sad and in tears for no reason. Yet I’d take myself off to my bathroom, run a bath and cry my little heart out.

Firstly, YOU ARE NOT GOING MAD, It’s a common symptom on peri menopause. So what’s causing it and what can you do about it.

Sometime crying stage lasts just a few months, sometimes longer. The uncontrollable crying can start at any time, at work, when in company or alone. And it can be embarrassing when you can’t explain what’s wrong. You can become more sensitive at this time and feel vulnerable. You can take things people say the wrong way or misinterpret things. (I lost my best friend she’d just turned 42 didn’t realise her hormones were up the creek and she was unhappy with all areas of her life).

Why is this happening?

Often it’s low oestrogen, our happy hormone. It acts like an antidepressant. Often it’s just a phase, a sudden dip in oestrogen when we’re more emotional. Plus lack of sleep, low oestrogen levels can make sleep more difficult, tired and emotional. Then there is stress again we often feel more stressed during this time of life

The Menopause is a natural phase of ageing and you can treat both the physical and emotional symptoms naturally.  Here’s the Hormone Fairy’s recommendations:

Homeopathic Remedies

Homeopathy offers natural remedies with no side effects which are great for the emotions.  Remedies such as Pulsatilla, Sepia, Ignatia, Cimicifuga and the ones I use most in my Clinic.

Ignatia for frustration and grief, Lac-humanum for sadness especially around the period or for those who are struggling with empty nest syndrome.  Cimicifuga (also known as black cohosh)  when feeling sad and gloomy, Pulsatilla and Sepia are both great remedies for women struggling with hormonal shifts.

If you’re not sure which remedies is right for you then book a consultation with me.  These can be done over the telephone, video call or in person.  For those of you outside of the UK, you’ll receive a prescription that you can order in your country.

Herbal Tinctures

If you’re looking at herbal tinctures always read the labels for contra-indications or speak to someone like myself who can prescribe for you.

Agnus castus helps to stimulate and normalise the pituitary gland functions, especially when it comes to progesterone, balancing hormones and PMS type symptoms.

Cimicifuga or Black cohosh as it’s known is useful instead of hormone replacement, and helps with depression type symptoms.

Hypericum is lovely, it’s also known as St John’s wort and it great for low moods and anxiety.  Just be careful as this can interfere with medications particularly HRT, hormonal contraception and anti-depressants. It can take 3 to 4 weeks before it starts working.  You can also take this as a Homeopathic remedy, great if you’re tearful.

Ginseng is good for lifting your moods, this works quicker than hypericum and is more for the short term mood boosts.

Lifestyle Tips

Stay away from the News or Media, bad news can make you feel worse and it can lower your immune system.

Get outside in nature as much as possible, expose your face, neck area and lower arms to the sunshine wherever possible to top up the vitamin D levels.

Meditate, you don’t need to be an expert, anyone  can listen to guided meditations through Youtube or apps on your smart phone.  This will reduce your stress levels

Eat well, head over to my blog to see what foods you can eat to help.

Talk, be open and honest with how you are feeling to your family, friends and colleagues.
