Christmas Red cabbage for Menopause Relief

Red cabbage has always been part of my Christmas meal, but did you know cabbage can help your menopause symptoms and boost your health.

Relieve Menopausal Symptoms Cabbage, particularly red cabbage which is easily found at this time of year.  Its contains phytoestrogens which can help reduce hot flashes and aid hormone balance.  Cruciferous veggies such as cabbage can help to reduce oestrogen and protect against heart disease and cancers too.

Lowers Cholesterol During the Menopause years any women struggle with digestive issues and high cholesterol.  Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in post menopausal women.  When you steam cabbage it helps the fibre properties bind with the bile acid in your stomach helping your body to absorb less cholesterol.

Anti-ageing properties Cabbage is rich in vitamin C which is known to provide anti-ageing benefits for skin, hair and teeth. It's also high in vitamin A which improves your skins complexion and can encourage the growth of new skin cells.

Prevents Hair Loss  Hair loss from the scalp is common in the peri and post menopause years, the vitamin A and sulphur content are known to stimulate hair growth plus being high in antioxidants that aids the hair, skin and nail growth.

May Help Prevent Cancer Phytochemicals found in cabbage along with other cancer-preventive properties can work against different cancers including: bladder, colon, breast and prostate cancer.

Immune System Booster  As mentioned cabbage is high in vitamin C helping to boost your immune system which is needed during the winter months, it also stimulates detoxifying enzymes which can help to boost your immune system as well as detox excess oestrogens.

Reduces Brain Fog and the Risk Of Alzheimer’s  Cabbage is high in vitamin K, in studies this has been found to protect cognitive functions and fight against the plaque that builds up causing memory loss.

Menopausal Weight Loss Most women will have tried the cabbage soup diet as some phase of their life! It's low in calories and high in water plus fibre, leaving you feeling full without the calories and provides you with all the nutrition you need.  Plus it aids digestion and detoxes the system which aids weight loss.

Skin Healing & Swollen Breasts Did you use Cabbage to help painful breasts during pregnancy or breast feeding?  Cabbage is known for its healing properties when used as part of a wrap and is useful when your breasts are swollen or tender during hormone fluctuations.  It can also be sued to treat skin irritations such as acne and eczema. You can place the cabbage leaves on your skin or crush the leaves and blend with water and leave on your skin, or some people blend cabbage and water into a paste and soak in a cloth on the skin.

Here’s my favourite Christmas Mulled Red Cabbage & Clementine recipe.

  • 4 clementines (or satsuma/mandarin).  Leave 1 Whole, juice & zest 3
